Meet him and you’ll be drawn to his magnetic personality. Hear him sing and you’ll call him “Gifted”. That’s how those who have had the privilege of working with RAab (pronounced Rob) describe him.
Singer, songwriter, producer, vocal coach and artist developer, Robert “RAab” Stevenson, has collaborated with some of the most famous voices and producers heard on urban and pop radio today.
Among them are Justin Timberlake, the Black Eyed Peas, Pharrell Williams, Veit Renn, Teddy Riley, Guy, 69 Boyz, 95 South, Lil Jon, Trick Daddy, Freddie Jackson, Timothy “Timbaland” Mosley, Kevin Kendricks, Wylie Morris, Al Green, Kylie Minogue, J.C. Chasez and Three 6 Mafia to name a few. He has lent his vocals, vocal arrangements, production and writing skills to create some of the hits we all love.
RAab’s journey began in 1994 with the release of his first solo album “You’re The One” on the Orlando, Florida based independent label, Rip-It Records. To his credits, RAab co-wrote and provided vocal arrangements for all eleven songs on the album. The first single “Foreplay” was an instant radio hit and garnered over 800,000 copies sold in the U.S., which aided the album in reaching Solid Gold status with over 500,000 copies sold.
This, no doubt, solidified him as a bona-fide talent in the music industry. With the success of his debut album, RAab was on top of the world. But, as it goes in the music industry, the higher up you go the harder you fall.
Such was the case, when Rip-It Records closed its doors forever. RAab felt he’d lost it all before he’d really had a chance to conquer it all. Refusing to be defeated, he packed his bags and headed to Atlanta, Georgia where he teamed up with producer, Shannon Houchins of 11th Hour Entertainment.
Together he and Shannon worked tirelessly on tracks for Bubba Sparks, Lauren Briant, Jagged Edge and 112. Shannon made the beats and RAab created the concepts and provided vocal arrangements on the hook and background vocals. Day in and day out, RAab worked on his talent, horning his writing skills, vocal abilities and learning as much about production as he could. But work in the industry didn’t come easy. In fact, it didn’t come for a while - - a very long while.
In the meantime, bills began to accumulate and RAab was struggling just to keep his head above water. At that moment, he knew he had to make some critical changes in his life or he wouldn’t survive. So, he made the decision to enroll in college and get a regular 9 to 5.
Two and half years passed as RAab tried to convince himself that he could acquire success and happiness if he just stayed the course with his new life’s path. But, the music kept calling…and calling…and calling… So the 9 to 5 went out the window, while a part time gig sufficed to pay the bills and RAab got back to the business of his soul -- his music.
Getting back in the game was no easy task. But the passion was too great to ignore. The more he was rejected, the hungrier he became and the harder he worked. The hard work definitely paid off. And, when opportunity knocked, RAab left his door wide open.
He spent two years touring with Justin Timberlake on the Justified/Stripped Tour as a background singer and background vocal arranger. And, when American Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson was dismissed from the show, he was summoned to write, arrange and co-produce three songs on her debut album which will feature their much anticipated duet, “Ghetto Love”.
While touring with Justin Timberlake for the second time, RAab serves as Lead Vocalist and tour vocal coach on the FutureSex/LoveSounds Tour.
When he is not on the road, RAab spends his time writing, recording, developing and executive producing new artists through his production company, KIMAD Productions.
Fittingly so, RAab is one of the most sought-after vocalists today. His schedule is jam-packed with concert performances, studio sessions, conference calls and meetings with A&R executives and label presidents requesting not only his services for their artists, but his name on their roster.
Hear him sing and you too, will call him…Gifted!
